Falling in love in Portland, Oregon. I met her at one of my book readings. Love pulls me to spend time with her in this wet green land -- so different from my dry altiplano home on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

As Bolivia and Peru are heading from spring to summer, here in Portland I watch leaves fall in chilled humid air where green is eternal.

Leaves falling. Shedding old ideas, old habits.

Eternal green. Enjoying the internal essence of life that never changes, even though everything else does.

Nam myoho renge kyo.

Enamorando en Portland, Oregon, EEUU. La encontré en una presentación de mi novela. El amor me jala pasar el tiempo con ella en este tierra mojada y verde -- tan diferente de mi hogar en el altiplano seco en las orillas del lago sagrado Titicaca.

Mientras Bolivia y Perú salen de la primavera y entran el verano, acá en Portland yo miro las hojas cayendo en el aire húmedo y frío, donde el verde es eterno.

Hojas cayendo. Botando conceptos antiguos, hábitos antiguos.

Verde eterno. Disfrutando la esencia interno vital que nunca cambia, aunque todo el mundo está cambiando.

Book Review: Island Beneath the Sea, by Isabel Allende

Isabelle Allende's novel, Island Beneath the Sea, is a timeless tale about the nature of power and how even the most powerless of people - a fictional 18th Century African slave woman named Zarité or even me or you - can become powerful in unexpected ways.

Power is explored in many of its different manifestations. The power of money. The power of violence. The power of social status. The power of popular opinion. The power of appearance. The power of addiction. The power of optimism. And most importantly, the power of love.

Many of the characters I see symbolizing a type of power.

Hortense Guizot - Power of social status
Violette Boisier - Power of appearance
Maurice - Power of optimism
Zarité - Power of love

Island Beneath the Sea is a historical novel set in the Caribbean and New Orleans against the backdrop of 18th Century world changes such as the US war of Independence, the French Revolution and the massive slave revolt that formed the country of Haiti.

During the first part of the book, I felt a mixture of emotions. The story of slavery and the excesses of the slave owners repulsed me. Yet, at the same time the story drew me in with the complex humanity that Isabel Allende finds in each of her characters. Just like in life, everyone thinks he or she is the good guy.

Isabel has said, "With relatives like mine I don't need to use my imagination, they alone provide all the material I need for my novels . . . . Many of my relatives have been the models for the characters in my books, like my grandparents who became Esteban Trueba and Clara del Valle in The House of the Spirits."

Writing characters inspired by people and experiences in ones own life follows the traditional dictum to "write what you know". For example, let's pause to look at another great writer - Ernest Hemingway. Shrapnel hit Hemingway's knee in World War One. He knew what that feels like. So, when his characters were wounded in war, they were often wounded in the same way as Hemingway. He could truthfully write, “I knew I was hit and leaned over and put my hand on my knee. My knee wasn’t there. My hand went in and my knee was down on my shin”.

Keeping with this tradition, Isabel Allende's grandfather seems to not only have become Esteban Trueba in House of the Spirits, but to have also become the character Toulouse Valmorain in The Island Beneath the Sea. Both Trueba (in Chile) and Valmorain (in Santo Domingo) are large land-owners who inherited their property that was neglected by the generation before them. The land was worked by slaves (indigenous peons in Chiles and African slaves in Santo Domingo). They both considered it acceptable behavior to rape girl slaves when they reached puberty and fathered a number of illegitimate mixed-race children. They both considered themselves to be model plantation or hacienda owners, because they treated their slaves better than their neighboring land barons treated their slaves. Both characters reveal love and tenderness to legitimate child descendents.

Valmorain in Island Beneath the Sea, fascinated me. It was intriguing to be able to peer inside the mind of this sugar plantation slave owner - to see his self-justification. Indeed, a whole society supported his belief system that what he was doing was good, just and even divine. It helps me to understand what might be going on in the minds of people in positions of power in any age, anywhere.

The title, Island Beneath the Sea, refers to an Afro-Caribbean belief in a paradisiacal afterworld. The novel reveals the power-structure's self-serving religious beliefs that equality is to be found only in heaven. But, the protagonist, Zarité, is convinced that equality can be achieved in the here and the now. Even through the most daunting of trials she holds on to this dream, this conviction of her heart.

In an interview, Allende said that she writes to entertain the reader. I find meaning deeper than mere entertainment in Allende's work. Like Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda has said - reading great literature makes it possible to learn from the lives of many different people, and not just from our own limited direct experience. I read novels seeking those life lessons. In Allende's work I find not only entertainment, but also great wisdom. I believe that Isabel Allende is a living treasure of humanity.

After finishing reading "The Island Beneath the Sea" I felt grounded, confident and filled with hope for the future.

Isla bajo el mar es una novela histórica ambientada en el Caribe y Nueva Orleans en el contexto de los cambios del mundo del 18o siglo, como la Revolución de la Independencia de EE.UU., la Revolución Francesa y el rebelde masivo de esclavos que formaron el país de Haití.

Durante la primera parte del libro, sentí una mezcla de emociones. La historia de la esclavitud y los excesos de los dueños de esclavos me rechazó. Sin embargo, el protagonista, Zarité, está convencido de que la igualdad se puede lograr en este mundo ahora. Que pasa lo que pasa, Zarité guarda a este sueño, esta convicción en su corazón.

En una entrevista, Allende dijo que ella escribe para entretener al lector. Me parece significado más profundo que un mero entretenimiento en el trabajo de Allende. Como líder budista Daisaku Ikeda ha dicho - la lectura de la gran literatura permite aprender de la vida de muchas personas diferentes, y no sólo de nuestra propia experiencia directa limitada. Yo leo las novelas en la búsqueda de las lecciones de la vida. En la obra de Allende no encontrar solamente entretenimiento, sino también una gran sabiduría. Yo creo que Isabel Allende es un tesoro viviente de la humanidad.
Después de terminar la lectura de "La Isla Bajo el Mar" me sentí tranquila, segura y llena de esperanza para el futuro.

Hunger in Japan

"I'm hungry," an elderly woman in quake and tsunami ravaged Japan told my friend George yesterday.

Food and water rations are being distributed by the Japanese government. But this woman's community receives only one riceball a day per person.

What can we do to help?

Why not take a break from war and reach out with friendship and affection? It's happened before. Back in World War I the soldiers stopped shooting each other, climbed out of their trenches and celebrated Christmas day together.

Instead of fighting wars, we could get into humanitarian competition, as has been suggested in a peace proposal by SGI Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda.

Which country's military can deliver more food and water to the suffering people in Japan?

Can you imagine that instead of bombs, all the aircraft carriers, war planes and helicoptors go to Japan and drop payloads of food and water (with little parachutes attached so they make gentle landings?). The military geeks can have fun figuring out the logistics of how to make this happen.

And that would be so much fun, then the contest could spread to other parts of the world where-ever hunger and thirst are felt.

Another contest could be what Yoko Ono articulated last week on CNN, for architects from around the world to design the most creative and life-affirming structures in rebuilding the quake and tsunami ravaged cities.

But before rebuilding begins, we need to care for the survivors. Scobie-John in Japan reports, "...insufficient rescue of those who have survived, the number of homeless is virtually beyond anyone's ability to look after, people, especially the elderly are in great need of medical and physical help, many are now dieing in the evacuation centres. Helpers & volunteers are working way beyond what they can cope with. Food also is just not around, many are living off one rice ball or piece of pastry for the day, if that. Donations are really needed."

As Buddhist sage Nichiren Daishonin wrote over 700 years ago, "When great evil occurs, great good follows."

We have seen and felt the effects of great evil (whether it is man-made, or caused by neglect by man). Let's set about creating a world of kindness, mutual aid and great good, now.

Donate to the Red Cross (or other aid organization of your choice). Write or call your government officials, urging them to take the lead in helping people.

Nothing is Impossible; How to live your dreams in a big big way

While on the West Coast Tour of "Lucy Plays Panpipes for Peace, a novel" to inspire you - I was asked to share a personal behind-the-scenes glimpse of how one goes about living ones dreams.

Here is the full transcript of that presentation last Sunday at a World Peace Prayer meeting of the SGI-USA in Glendale, California.

We practice Nichiren Buddhism with the SGI in order to live our dreams and contribute to World Peace.

One of my dreams was to follow the sound of the panpipes to Peru and Bolivia, seeking to find or create the ideal society of which they sing.

I have been able to use my Buddhist practice to live my dreams as an artist

and create value towards mutual understanding between people.

I learned how to play the panpipes and to speak Spanish.

I studied Quechua, the language of the Inka, for 2 years at UCLA.

I recorded 2 cds, the second was with top Bolivian musicians in Ayni Records.

I am the only foreign and only woman member of a traditional indigenous panpipe group in Ilave, Peru.

I made an award winning music video with people in Oruro, Bolivia who later almost all received their gohonzons and helped the local SGI group grow from

just one active member

to a thriving large district

that conducts its own kosen rufu gongyos,

like we are doing

here

today.

I wrote a novel, "Lucy Plays Panpipes for Peace" based on my experiences in the Andes, where I am a member of SGI-Bolivia and a permanent resident (with a Bolivian Greencard).

Why I am in North America

is because I am doing

a book tour,

from Vancouver, Canada

all the way down the West Coast,

ending

here

Southern California

on December 19.

Each of these accomplishments

was a result of confronting my fears

and fundamental darkness

head-on

with strong daimoku based on

faith, practice and study of the writings of

Nichiren Daishonin and President Daisaku Ikeda

Through continually seeking to strengthen my faith, practice and study with the SGI these past almost 26 years, I am developing the fortune to be in the right place at the right time and played panpipes of the opening title credits of the Academy Award Nominated Documentary "Recycled Life".

As some of you know, I am in the process of turning my first novel, "Lucy Plays Panpipes for Peace", into a feature film.

One experience from that filming process, I was requested to share with you today.

FILM

In Bolivia, I started gathering a film crew 3 months before the date of when I wanted to film the major scene in a public place in El Alto with 1,000s of free extras who would be there participating in a major indigenous ceremony. 2 weeks before that shooting date, all the cinema people I knew bailed on me and I was starting over from zero, because I knew absolutely no one else in the film industry in La Paz, Bolivia, and even if I did - I had a next to no budget.

So, I chanted nam myoho renge kyo to my gohonzon

with strong determination

that nothing is impossible,

If Nichiren could light up the execution beach at Tatsunokuchi with a meteor,

then somehow

would

find a great crew

on my next-to-nothing budget

to shoot this scene

on that certain day,

just 2 weeks away.

Like Nichiren writes in "On Attaining Buddhahood" - " when you chant ... you must summon up deep faith that Myoho-renge-kyo is your life itself.. Never doubt in the slightest."

After chanting, I took my trash out.

I sat on the curb reading a book, next to my sack of garbage, waiting for the trashtruck. As neighbors walked by, we greeted each other. One neighbor asked me what it was I do. I said that I am an independent artist and I'm making a movie and I need help.

What does he do? Did he once tell me that he makes cameras?

No, he said, I make lenses for microscopes but the most famous director in Bolivia lives in that house there. But, he doesn't live there anymore. He lives in .... I don't remember.

You'll remember.

And we kept chatting.

Oh! He lives on such and such street. His name is... I forget.

You'll remember.

We kept chatting.

Oh yeah! His name is Paolo. Paolo.... I forget.

You'll remember.

We kept chatting.

I remember! Paolo Agazzi!

The trash truck came, I emptied my trash, went back home and looked in the phone book. There were 2 listings for Paolo Agazzi. One at his old address and one at his new. I called. His wife answered.

I said,

"I'm your old neighbor on such and such street and I'm making a movie and I need help."

Paolo's on location. Here's his cell number.

I called him.

He answered.

We talked. He said to meet him in his office the next Tuesday.

Having stirred the universe into action with my strong daimoku, the very next day I got an email from another director who had not been responding to any emails or phone calls for weeks. Suddenly, out of the blue, he emailed me a bid saying he would provide

himself,

a line producer,

a HD camera,

equipment for a crane shot,

lights,

transportation,

2 days on location

and a third day for preparation,

all of that for a flat fee

that was 90%

lower

than his previous

bid.

Now all I needed, I thought, was 5 actors and another camera person.

On Tuesday when I arrived in Paolo Agazzi's office he was there with his casting director.

"Tell her what type of actors you need."

I did.

"What else do you need?"

I need a camera person.

He picks up his cell phone and calls one of his camera people.

"Hey! Paolo here. My good friend, Lynette, is doing a film and she's going to be calling you."

He hangs up and hands me a paper with the man's name and number.

What else do you need? An art director?

"Okay," I say, even though I had no budget for an art director.

He picks up his cell phone and calls another person.

"My good friend Lynette is doing a project and she's going to be calling you."

He hangs up and hands me another piece of paper, this one with the art director's name and number.

When I called the camera man, he responded with "Where do you want to meet and when?" and there he was, right on time.

This was totally different

than the old crew

who I had spent 3 months negotiating with,

to no avail.

I showed the camera man the story board.

He loved the project.

He said he was willing to take a deep cut in pay to work with me,

because he really believed in the message I was conveying.

Later it became obvious that I did indeed need an art director, even though I was already over budget. I called the contact. He said "When and where?" and he was there. I showed him the storyboard. He loved the project.

"Now it's time to talk money," I said.

He said,

"I'm very

very

expensive."

With my high life condition from chanting strong and abundant daimoku I just leaned back and laughed, and said,

"And I

have

nothing!"

He said.

"I'll do it

for

free,"

"Just buy the materials.

When you make it big in Hollywood

you can pay me then."

So, we successfully shot that major scene and everyone,

the sound man,

the musicians,

the dancers,

the actors,

the make up person,

the stage manager,

the director,

line producer,

art director,

camera man,

everyone

worked together in harmony,

due to my strong determined daimoku.

Gratitude fills my heart for the wonderful people who came together and lent 100% of their creative energies to make this happen. Thank you.

This is just one of many amazing experiences on my continuing journey of seeking to unite my heart with my mentor in life, President Daisaku Ikeda, who recently was awarded his 300th academic honor,

even though he never graduated

from college.

I'm striving to develop my Buddha nature through faith, practice and study

with the SGI,

in order to become

absolutely happy

and contribute to

world peace.

With daimoku based on strong faith, practice and study,

as 2nd Soka Gakkai President Toda said,

"Nothing is impossible."

A través de una búsqueda constante para fortalecer mi fe, la práctica y el estudio de la SGI en estos últimos casi 26 años, estoy desarrollando la fortuna de estar en el lugar correcto en el momento adecuado y tocó flauta de los créditos de apertura título del documental nominado al Oscar " Vida reciclada ".
Como algunos de ustedes saben, estoy en el proceso de convertir mi primera novela, "Zampoñas por la Paz", en un largometraje.
Una experiencia de ese proceso de filmación, se me pidió compartir con ustedes hoy.

En Bolivia, que comenzó a reunir un equipo de filmación de tres meses antes de la fecha de cuando yo quería filmar la escena principal en un lugar público en El Alto con 1.000 s de extras sin que se haya participar en una ceremonia indígena importante. 2 semanas antes de que la fecha de captura, toda la gente del cine sabía rescatados en mí y yo estaba empezando de nuevo desde cero, porque yo no sabía absolutamente nadie más en la industria del cine en La Paz, Bolivia, e incluso si lo hice - yo tenía un casi nada de presupuesto.
Por lo tanto, yo cantaba nam myoho renge kyo a mi Gohonzoncon la firme determinaciónque nada es imposible,Si Nichiren podría iluminar la playa de ejecución en la Tatsunokuchi con un meteoro,entonces de alguna maneraIseencontrar un gran equipoen mi siguiente-a-nada presupuestopara rodar esta escenaen ese día concreto,a sólo 2 semanas.
Al igual que Nichiren escribe en "El logro de la Budeidad" - "cuando cantas ... hay que armarse de fe profunda de que Myoho-renge-kyo es su vida misma .. Nunca dude en lo más mínimo."
Después de cantar, me tomé mi basura.Me senté en la acera de leer un libro, al lado de mi saco de basura, esperando que el trashtruck. Como vecinos andaban por ahí, nos saludamos unos a otros. Un vecino me preguntó qué era lo que yo hago. Me dijo que soy un artista independiente y estoy haciendo una película y necesito ayuda.
¿Qué hace? ¿Sabía que una vez me dicen que hace que las cámaras?
No, él dijo, yo hago las lentes de los microscopios, pero el director más famoso en la vida de Bolivia en esa casa allí. Pero, él no vive ahí. Vive en .... No me acuerdo.

El camión de la basura llegó, vacié mi basura, volvió a su casa y buscó en la guía telefónica. Había dos listados de Paolo Agazzi. Uno en su antigua dirección y otro en su nuevo. Llamé. Su esposa respondió.
Me dijo:"Yo soy tu viejo vecino de la calle tal y tal y yo estoy haciendo una película y necesito ayuda."
Paolo de la ubicación. Aquí está su número de celular.
Lo llamé.
Él respondió.
Hablamos. Él dijo a su encuentro en su oficina el próximo martes.

El martes cuando llegué a la oficina de Paolo Agazzi de que estaba allí con su director de casting.
"Dile qué tipo de actores que necesita."
Yo lo hice.
"¿Qué más necesito?"
Necesito una persona de la cámara.
Él toma su teléfono celular y llama a uno de la gente de su cámara.
"¡Hey! Paolo aquí. Mi buen amigo, Lynette, está haciendo una película y ella va a estar llamando."
Él cuelga y me entrega un papel con el nombre del hombre y el número.¿Qué más necesita? Un director de arte?
-Está bien-digo, aunque yo no tenía presupuesto para un director de arte.
Él toma su teléfono celular y llama a otra persona.
"Mi buen amigo de Lynette está haciendo un proyecto y que va a estar llamando."
Él cuelga y me entrega una hoja de papel, esta vez con el nombre del director de arte y el número.

Fat Old Lady Bicycles West Coast Book Tour to Inspire You to Live Your Dreams

Wow. It looks like I may be the first author to do her book tour by bicycle (with help from public transit). In the DIY spirit of simplifying life, starting October 7, I am pedaling "Lucy Plays Panpipes for Peace, a novel" from Vancouver, BC, Canada to Southern California in order to inspire people to live their dreams. The calendar of appearances is on www.musicandes.com.
Musicians have also been Going Green and bicycling across the country. In 2006 the Ditty Bops bicycled their tour. Rocker Attica! Attica! did his Ditch the Van Bike Tour for Charity in 2009. Now Ben Sollee has strapped his cello to his bicycle and is pedaling from gig to gig. He has a sponsor to help video and promote his work. That's great!

Living our dreams can be scary business.

Sometimes I get nervous and even freeze in fear at what I am attempting. After all, I'm not a young rocker or a young cellist guy. I am a lone woman over 50 years old and fat. Maybe even obese (isn't that an ugly word?). But, hey, I already have followed the sound of the panpipes to the Andes, seeking the ideal society of which they sing, and wrote a novel about it. There were lots of scary moments in that journey, too. Don't believe me? Just check out the Warrior Town chapter of Lucy Plays Panpipes for Peace.

When I freeze, I just make myself do something — like Daisaku Ikeda says — and take action. I answer the next email confirming a gig, pack the next box, chant nam myoho renge kyo and the fear passes. And then enthusiasm builds.

From South America I fly into San Francisco, in order to visit friends, pick up my bicycle and attend the 50-year anniversary celebration of SGI Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda's first visit to the Americas. Then I pedal to the Amtrak station, try out my new toolkit to disassemble my bike and put it in a box as I board the train to Vancouver for the October 7 presentation at Simon Fraser University, then on to Seattle, Oregon, and California.

Part of living simply, for me, is to not buy more stuff than I need. So, I am not buying panniers for my bicycle, or a bike trailer or anything like that. I will bungee cord my old backpack onto the rack and pedal to the next venue, carrying all my gear, books and musical instruments to present "Lucy Plays Panpipes for Peace, a novel" to inspire people to live their dreams. Beyond the Inka Trail / Mas alla del Camino Inka

You've probably heard of the Inka Trail to Machu Picchu. Hundreds of dollars. Waiting list months long. But what most folks don't know is that there are Inka Trails all over the Andes and even treks that follow trails made by llamas. I just hiked one of these high country treks in the Cordillera of Bolivia. Here is what it was like.

There are no trees or bushes at this elevation of about 5,000 meters above sea level. Ichu bunch grass covers the ground. Llamas and sheep nibble it down to a buzz-cut stubble. Tiny white star-shaped flowers bloom in private crevices. Volcanic rock shoots craggy black spires against the sapphire August winter sky. Glaciers shimmer white in the changing light of the sun. We hear only the crunching of our boots on the shale gravel, the gentle laughter of water trickling over rocks and ice, the cry of a lamb scampering to its mother and the tinkle of a bell tied around the neck of a grazing llama.

I chose Adolfo Andino out of the many tourist trekking agencies that line Sagarnaga Street in La Paz, Bolivia. Since I am 51 years old and overweight, I requested a "lite" version of a trek. Adolfo recommended Tuni to the base camp of Condoriri for Day 1; for Day 2, a day hike as desired around that glacial valley or an attempt to reach Pico Austria; and for Day 3 a hike back to Tuni. For $110 each, he organized everything for our expedition—loaned us Doite Tents and Northface sleeping bags (a bit worn by much use), bought our food, coordinated our private transportation to and from the trailhead, and hired a guide and her mule to accompany my friend and me, carry our gear, and even set up our tents and cook our meals.

Regina, an Aymara woman, and her mule were our companions. She strapped on the back of the grey fuzzy-faced creature our backpacks, borrowed tents and sleeping bags, a kerosene cookstove, and a box with three days' worth of food. The trek started at Regina's home in the rural community of Tuni, which we reached from a dirt road that crossed the highway to Copacabana in the pueblo of Patamata. The first part of the hike crossed marshlands (jump over the rivulets!) then followed a dirt road that runs past a reservoir monitored by the water company EPSAS. After passing small dams with stonework that my friend Barb commented resembled the work of the ancient Tiwanaku culture, we left the dirt road and followed a llama path up a grassy slope.

The path led us through a glacier-carved canyon where flocks of llamas grazed and occasionally approached us out of curiosity. At a resting point, one of the llamas facing me made a hacking sound and started moving its jaw around as if ready to launch a major loogie. I asked Regina what I should do to avoid being spat upon. Should I freeze? Should I run? She said not to worry about doing anything. The llama was irritated by another llama. They only spit at each other. Unless, that is, you try to grab one.

The loogie never got launched and that llama shared part of our journey with us at a companionable distance.

We camped near an adobe house on the shore of a lake formed by the melting glaciers, which looked so close it seemed as if I could reach out and touch the horizon. Although daylight was t-shirt weather for Barb, at sundown we put on all the layers we had brought. The stars came out with a clarity seldom seen by urban eyes. The Milky Way was truly like milk spilt across a glittery black velvet tablecloth. The Southern Cross was harder to find now that gazillions of its neighbors were out and about. Orion had all of his accoutrements on display.

The woman who lives in the adobe house offered to cook us fresh trout she had caught from the lake. We accepted and enjoyed a delicious meal with homegrown Andean native potatoes.

Trout are not native to the Andes. They have been "planted" in many lakes for commerce or to control mosquitoes in man-made reservoirs. Further North, in Lake Titicaca, the trout are reducing the native fish populations. But in this isolated high-altitude lake, it appears that there would not have been any fish except for the introduced trout that we were savoring.

In our tents, our water bottles froze in the night as we tossed and turned, trying to stay warm. (Hint: bundle up in so many layers of clothes that you could sleep warm with just those clothes. Then the sleeping bag is an extra bonus. Do not rely on the borrowed bag and foam mat to keep you toasty when temperatures drop below freezing.)

Sunrise of warmth and joy. It is easy to sense why the sun was and is a major deity in the cultures of the Andes: Inti. Life-giving, life-nourishing Inti. I felt like singing in appreciation for the sun, like the Inkas sang for two days, according to a Spanish chronicler over 400 years ago. The whole town, he wrote, sang a ceremony with the sun. The song started softly with sunrise, crescendoed to a climax at high noon, and slowly subsided in the afternoon to the final note ending with the last ray of sunset. That was verse one. Verse two they sang the second day. The chronicler was stricken with fear at the majestic power of the people singing in harmony with the sun.

After this three-day hike at the top of the Andes, I felt like my spiritual batteries had been recharged and my mind had been defragmented.

MAS ALLA DEL CAMINO INKA

Two Money-Saving Tips, the (sort of) Andean way

1. Stop buying Ritalin for your kid.

Did you know that a study showed that learning to swim well improved reading and writing skills in ADD-diagnosed children? If you do not have a body of water nearby, maybe other physical exercise will improve your child's focus and calmness.

For example, when I lived with a family in the countryside of Nicaragua - where there are no roads, no electricity (no TV or screens of any kind), and you hike a mile to get to the river to carry back water - I noticed that the children were much calmer and more focused. For example, four-year-olds expertly sharpened machetes then climbed trees to cut limbs for firewood.

Children are capable of so much more than Western Industrialized Society allows them to do. One child in particular comes to mind. She grew up running on hillsides, climbing trees, digging clay with her aunts on the rising of the full moon, scrubbing clothes on a rock in the river that birthed from a nearby spring where the Duende lived (the spirit of the mountain). I never heard her complain, even in the most physically uncomfortable of circumstances. She has grown up into a remarkably self-possesed young woman and a brilliant ceramic artist.

Save money on drug prescriptions and have happier children and a happier you.

2. Stop buying air fresheners.

Save money and protect your health. Those air freshener sprays are laden with chemicals that harm you and the environment from start to finish.

Instead, pick some flowers from that community garden you created with your neighbors. (Or ask your kid to run over and pick the flowers. More exercise for a growing body and mind!). The natural floral scent will freshen the room. And they are a lot more beautiful to look at than a can that will go into the garbage and then into landfills that won't be healthy for the earth for many, many years. When the flowers wilt and get slimy, add them to your compost and they will soon be nutrition for next year's flowers!

And to really clean the air, potted plants work great. Get a cutting from a friend, some dirt from outside, and a pot can be any old container. Place in a sunny spot and just add water. Potted plants suck out volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air in your home.

Six Money-Saving Tips, the Andean Way; Ancient wisdom for today

These six money-saving tips are part of a lovely, environmentally gentle and culturally sensitive cycle that will improve your health and save you money!

1. Use old clothes as rags.
You don't need to buy Swiffer covers or special Handi-Wipes or anything.
2. Use white cotton rags instead of Band-Aids.
Got a little cut or owie? Grab a strip of those old clothes (that you have sterilized by boiling) and tie it around your finger, or wherever your owie is. Stops the bleeding and keeps the wound clean to heal quickly. No more money spent on Band-Aids!
3. Use cloth diapers instead of disposable.
Whether for babies or anybody with bladder control issues, save money by not buying disposable diapers. You save at the checkout stand, and you save in the long run by not polluting with yet more garbage, or supporting plastics industries that by their very nature pollute. Your air will be cleaner, the climate will bit by bit stabilize, you will be healthier. When I was a little girl I remember that the babysitter washed cloth diapers by first soaking them in the toilet bowl to remove the solid matter.
(Guys, if you get grossed out by the thought of feminine bodily fluids, you might want to stop reading here.)
4. Cut up old cotton clothes into strips and use instead of sanitary napkins or tampons
That's right. Save money. Don't buy any more tampons or sanitary napkins! That's what I'm doing. Actually I got the idea from my step-mom, who grew up on a farm in the Midwest. She said that is what they used. Plus, you are protecting the environment by not adding more garbage to the world.
5. Sell your washing machine at a garage sale.
Save money on your electric bill. Don't throw those bloody strips of cloth into the washer machine. Wash them by hand. At first it kind of grossed me out. But I got over it. Wash all your clothes by hand! That's what most of us do, here in the Andes.
The rag I spread out on the drainboard next to the sink. I use a block of soap that is made locally. No colorants or deodorants. Just lard and lye and ... well, I don't know if there are any other ingredients. It is the beige color of animal fat, and has a bit of that earthy aroma. With the soap I use a scrub brush, like I saw my neighbor using. I rub the brush over the bar of soap then dip it in water (cold, or warmed in the sun — save yet more money on gas and electric bills!) and scrub away. I scrub in the direction of the sink, so the spatters mainly end up there, ready to get rinsed down the drain.
The neighbor, who taught me the scrub brush technique, uses a chemical laundry detergent. It is packed with environment-killing phosphates that were long ago banned in the States. The soap idea I learned from a rural family, with whom I lived for some time. They told me they used to use a fruit from a certain tree that lathers up, much like the soap root native to the central coast of California. But, with U.S.-style consumerism being promoted worldwide, they started buying soap.
I wonder how the environment reacts to the soap I use. Anyone know if natural animal fat soap water is good for irrigating organic vegetable gardens?
In the countryside, we washed our clothes on rocks in the river. They had a special rock that was flat and angled into the water. You spread each item of wet clothing, one at a time, on the rock. Then you rub a bar of soap all over the surface of the clothing. Then grab a wad of the bottom of the clothing, and pin down the top with your other hand, and scrub. Every now and then you pour water over the item of clothing. And scrub some more.
You can even make your own soap! Sell it and make money.

Washing by hand is good exercise. Save yet more money because you won't need to go to the gym or an exercise class. Get your workout in the Andean way. Labor with your hands.
6. Don't buy new underwear.
Did you know that underwear is a recent invention? That's right. Check it out for yourself. Google "history" and "underwear" and see what you find.
Traditional indigenous women here in the Andes often don't use underwear. It is a very practical habit. When you have the urge to urinate, you just poosh out your big skirts like a tent and squat in the field or the street or wherever. Guys no longer have a monopoly on using the world as their urinal.
You save money! As your old cotton underwear falls apart, you can cut it up and use it for when you are "on the rag."

Ahorre dinero en su factura de electricidad. No tire las tiras de tela con sangre en la máquina lavadora. Lavar a mano. Al principio me especie de asco. Pero lo superé. Lavar toda la ropa a mano! Eso es lo que la mayoría de nosotros, aquí en los Andes.
El trapo que se despliegan en los escurridor junto al lavabo. Puedo usar un bloque de jabón que se hace a nivel local. Sin colorantes ni desodorantes. Sólo manteca de cerdo y lejía y ... bueno, yo no sé si hay cualquier otro ingrediente. Es el color beige de grasa animal, y tiene un poco de ese aroma a tierra. Con el jabón que uso un cepillo de acero, como yo vi a mi vecino usando. Me froto el cepillo sobre la pastilla de jabón a continuación, lo moje en agua (fría o caliente en el sol - ahorrar dinero aún más en las facturas de gas y electricidad!) Y el matorral de distancia. Pero, con el consumismo al estilo estadounidense está promoviendo en todo el mundo, que comenzó a comprar jabón.

Swimming vs Ritalin in Treating ADD; Nelly Yankovic, a mom in Chile, shakes up the way ADD-diagnosed children develop.

When doctors suggested Nelly Yankovic drug her son so he could sit still long enough to learn to read, and she noticed that 60% of the children she was teaching were taking prescription Ritalin several times a day, it struck her as "not right."

The DEA agrees. As long ago as 1996 they reported that Ritalin (methylphenidate) is "potent, addictive and abusable," and it is "over-prescribed, over-marketed and over-sold." Prescriptions increased 500% from 1990 to 1996.

Since then, the prescribed (and not prescribed) use of this psychotropic drug has only increased. While some children experience no side effects, other children taking Ritalin drop dead.

Nelly decided to do something about it.

Being a physical education teacher, she knew from personal experience that conscious physical exercise can develop self-discipline and focus.

What if ADD-diagnosed children, instead of taking Ritalin, were taught to correctly swim the crawl stroke?

She contacted neurologists and other experts and convinced them to conduct a study. The results of that study will soon be published in Spain. Here is a sneak preview.

Guess what? Swimming, correctly, improves academic test scores. And as you can imagine, the exercise also improves health. And of course we feel more self-esteem when we are strong and have mastered a skill.

I had the great honor to meet with this mom who is making a difference, Nelly Yankovic. Here is an English translation of our conversation.

What inspired you to conduct this study? What experiences in your life compelled you to dedicate your efforts to the field of swimming and its relationship to learning?

The grand inspiration that led me to carry out this research is my son. I want my son to be (as much as possible) happy. In my opinion, swimming is a method that helps students who have difficulties learning to read and write overcome these difficulties.

You have conducted impressive research about the effects of learning to swim well on improving grades, in comparison to children taking Ritalin. Can you tell us something about these studies?

The study was of [the relationship between] Ritalin, swimming, and learning how to read and write in children between 6 and 11 years old who had learning disabilities. I studied the pedagogy of physical education. When I started teaching physical education I noticed that 60% of the second graders were given a pill called Ritalin, with the objective for those children to concentrate and be able to learn the class subjects. That was how the children stayed calm and got very good grades.

I decided to demonstrate that by learning to correctly swim the crawl stroke, that the students could successfully learn to read and write. They had good results.

The study was conducted with groups of 10 students each that had difficulties learning to read and write. The students were selected by the child psychologist Amanda Labarca in the municipality of Vitacura in Santiago, Chile. The high school has a heated swimming pool.

At the end of the year and after 30 sessions of swimming, the 10 students of the experimental group demonstrated (in various tests) a significant improvement in reading and writing. They had better grades and were more homogeneous than the control group. Furthermore, they had a good time being in contact with water — they learned in a natural way.

The children on Ritalin had even higher test scores, and the control group had not improved their reading and writing abilities at all by the year-end test.

In the study, the children taking Ritalin had better grades scholastically than the children swimming. In your opinion, how important are grades apart from everything else that makes us human beings? Do you believe that grades are the only way to judge the quality of a person?

Grades or scoring or evaluations that they give to students can stigmatize the child. The teacher needs to be very careful. Every single student is unique and furthermore I believe that for every single student there needs to be a unique method for teaching this person.

Children who take Ritalin have higher grades than those who do not consume this medicine. The problem is if they are not medicated, they do not have excellent scores.

Whereas, practicing the crawl stroke, correctly, improves reading and writing scores. It is a natural method that has for its objective the physical psychomotor activity of the thick trunk; promotes the development of fine motor skills and of being better coordinated, such as breathing correctly.

In regards to scores or grades, these can cause damage to the self-esteem of the student.

On the other hand, a student with high grades is not guaranteed future success... or happiness or to be kind-hearted or loving. My experience in the school was to evaluate according to the initial capacities of each student.

In your opinion, what are the ingredients, or qualities, for a person to be well-developed?

The qualities to be a well-developed person are different for each student. Each student has different needs.

As Nelly Yankovic is rebuilding her home and life in earthquake-ravaged Santiago, Chile, she continues this self-motivated work to benefit children around the world. And her son? He is happily reading and writing and swimming.

R. Ritalin, natacion y el aprendizaje de leer y escribir en escolares entre 6 y 11 anos que tienen dificultades al respecto.

Yo termine de estudiar pedagogia en Educacion Fisica a los 40 anos. Retome esta carrera a los 35 anos.

Cuando me inicie como pedagoga dando clases de educacion fisica medi cuenta que al 60 por ciento de los alumnos de un segundo ano basico se les daba una pastilla llamada ritalin.con el objetivo de que estos ninos se concentraran y pudieran aprender las materias en clases..Asi los ninos se mantienen tranquilos y obtienen muy buenas calificaciones.

Yo decidi demostrar que utilizando la natacion como un metodo para aprender a leer y escribir los escolares tambien logran aprender a leer y escribir. Claro que sus aprendizajes van a resultar buenos, no excelentes como con el ritalin.

Para realizar la investigacion se consideraron 2 grupos:

cada grupo esta formado por 10 escolares que presentan dificultades para aprender a leer y escribir .Estos grupos fueron seleccionados por las psicopedagogas del Liceo Amanda Labarca en la comuna de Vitacura en Santiago de Chile. Este liceo tiene piscina temperada.

El grupo experimental iba a las clases de natacion y a las clases de psicopedagogia

.El grupo experimental asistia solamente a las clases de psicopedagogia

Al final del ano y despues de 30 sesiones de natacion los 10 escolares del grupo experimental demostraron ( por medio de varios test) una significativa mejoria en sus aprendizajes de leer y escribir. Los del grupo experimental obtuvieronmejores evaluaciones y mas homogeneas que los del grupo control. Ademas lo pasaron bien en contacto con el agua, Aprendieron en forma natural...........

El grupo control no obtuvo mejoria en sus aprendizajes de leer y escribir al aplicar el test al final del ano.

P. En las investigaciones, los niños tomando Ritalin tenian mejoras notas en sus estudios de los niños nadando. ¿Que opinas tu de la importancia de notas, aparte de todo el resto de ser humano? ¿Creas que las notas son la unica manera para calificar la calidad de una persona?

R. Las notas o calificaciones , o evaluaciones que se les da a los escolares pueden estigmatizar al alumno. El profesor debe tener mucho cuidado. Cada uno de los alumos es único y por lo tanto ( pienso) que para cada alumno en particular debe existir un metodo particular para ese alumno.

Los alumos que toman ritalin tienen mejores calificaciones que los que no consumen ese medicamento.El problema es que " si no consumen el medicamento no tienen un excelente rendimiento.

El practicar correctamente nado crol mejora el rendimiento de la lectoescritura : es un metodo natural que tiene por objetivo desarrollar: la psicomotricidad del tronco ( gruesa) ; promueve el desarrollo de la motricidad fina y de las difrentes coordinaciones ; así como una correcta respiración.

Respecto de las calificaciones o notas, estas pueden causar daño en la austoestima del escolar. Por otro lado un alumno con notas sobresalientes :no significa que su futuro sea exitoso......y feliz . y bondadoso y amoroso. Mi experiencia en la esuela fué evaluar de acuerdo a las capacidades iniciales de cada alumno.

P. En tu opinion, ¿que son los ingredientes, o cualidades, para ser una persona bien desarrollada?

R. Las cualidades para ser una persona bien desarrollada van a " ser" diferentes para cada alumno. Cada alumno tiene necesidades diferentes.

An Interview with Musician/Storyteller Michael Heralda of the "Aztec Stories" Project

That's how you say "May you spend a good day" in Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. Los Angeles musician/composer/storyteller Michael Heralda reconnects people to the wisdom of the ancestors with his Aztec Stories project. I had the great good fortune to perform and record with Michael, and now to sit down and pick his brain about lots of things — from the ancient past, to the meaning of the end of the Mayan calender.

Here in the Andes, many people are proud of indigenous wisdom and are active in promoting the wisdom of the ancestors. However, I am sad to see others who do not value the traditions of indigenous culture. For example, even though parents in a household both speak Quechua or Aymara, many do not speak it with their children. Neither are the majority passing on the knowledge of how to gather medicinal plants or plants for dying wool or how to spin and weave the ancestral textiles. There is the belief that if the children speak Spanish and even English, they can "get ahead" in society. That it is better for their children to learn business administration and marketing and accounting than it is to know the oral tradition stories of the grandparents. Michael, as someone whose family, some generations back, cut the flow of transmitting ancestral wisdom in order to "get ahead" in the United States, what thoughts would you like to share with families who are in the process of cutting the flow in this very generation?

I would offer for consideration that parents and grandparents NOT cut off transmitting their original languages or ancestral knowledge and wisdom, because those unique components of their heritage will become the foundation that their children will build their lives upon. Having an indigenous understanding or upbringing does not mean that you cannot have a business background or marketing contribution to make. It is not a question of “one or the other.” Our children need to have both types of education — a solid cultural base of knowledge and the tools necessary to contribute in today’s technologically modern world.
There are life lessons contained in the oral tradition stories and working with your hands (as in weaving, sculpting, gardening, etc.) develops patience and an artistic eye for beauty. Regarding plant knowledge, there is an old saying that goes like this: “A man who knows how to work with the Earth and with plants will never lack for food or medicine when needed.” Growing up learning to work with the earth and nature are experiences that will ground our children in ways that the modern world rarely promotes, understands, or acknowledges as vital life experiences.

It is natural for parents to want a better world for their children and grandchildren. The key is in knowing what a “better world” is. Is it a better world when today’s administrators, politicians, scientists, and engineers create an imbalance in the world by polluting the water, air, and land that all creatures on this planet require for survival? Those educated people are the very same ones who are not connected to their ancestral heritage because if they were, they would know that their energies and talents should not be directed in those directions. This is why we need our [native] children to be immersed in our culture and at the same time acquiring the skills necessary to participate globally in the modern world. Our children need to be contributors and participants in both worlds.

Michael, what was your path in creating Aztec Stories? Were there pivotal events in your life?

This is a question I get asked many times. Awareness, one of four main characteristics that I believe are essential for personal growth and development, comes to mind when answering this question. One pivotal event for me was when I found a particular book at a yard sale. Today I wonder if I found the book or if it found me? Things happen for specific reasons and becoming aware of situations or events offers us the opportunity for growth and new experiences.

After reading my yard sale book I was motivated to learn as much as I could about the Mexica/Aztec culture and in learning about that culture I began learning things about myself. From that point on things started falling into place for me resulting in developing the Aztec Stories project. One thing to keep in mind with the concept of awareness is that with awareness comes responsibility – we are given awareness for a reason and once we have it we need to do something with it. To me, the decision to share what I had learned became the focus of my energy and that energy transformed into the cultural programs I, and my family, now share.

Michael, you mention that "awareness" is one of four main characteristics that you believe are essential for personal growth and development. What are the other three?

The four characteristics essential for personal growth and development are Patience, Awareness, Endurance, and Compassion.

I agree with you — patience, endurance, awareness, compassion. How did you come up with this list?

This is not something new and I have heard a number of versions of it over the years from various people with different cultural backgrounds. These are actually common sense characteristics. Unfortunately, society has given up on most common sense so it's important to remind people from time to time of the basics in just being a good human/person. When you think about each one, individually, you begin to appreciate how important each one is. Together, even more important.

How has your life changed as you have been delving deeper into learning the wisdom of the ancestors?

Learning about ancient wisdom has taught me something very important — that I know very little and that there is so much more to learn. I also have a greater appreciation for nature and the simple acts of working with nature. Additionally, I think more about how and where my time and energy is being used so that I can focus it in a positive and meaningful way as much as possible.

What drew you to pre-Columbian musical instruments, especially the Bubalek?

The organic essence of their being is most appealing to me. One of the most intriguing aspects of native/indigenous instruments is that they are made from materials readily available to anyone – you can make them from sticks, gourds, clay, parts of animals, etc. There is a natural and simplistic characteristic about them that attracts me. Plus, knowing that for thousands of years instruments like these have been played by musicians in ceremonies and celebrations around the world inspires me. In one way, I am reconnecting with my ancestors through the instruments, the music they produce, and the songs and stories I use them in.

The instruments themselves have energy and I thoroughly enjoy discovering their magical secrets and expressions. What I love most is that anyone can play them with little instruction. I can take ten (young or old) volunteers and hand them an instrument and in less that one minute we will have created an indigenous orchestra – kids who never played an instrument before are now making music together! They are experiencing the joy of music – what I refer to as a celebration of LIFE! What adds to the overall experience for me is that many of these young musicians are playing the very same type of instruments their ancestors played. In the music and experience they feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.

The Mayan Bubalek gourd water drums are very unique instruments. They are instruments that you can GROW! You feel their resonance in the mid-section of your body while playing them. While listening to them the soothing sounds can transport your thoughts and imagination to some very calming and tranquil states of being. They are soothing and melodic. My wife Sandy personally loves playing them of all the instruments we bring to a presentation. I rarely get to play them anymore during a presentation and just the other day while we were discussing an upcoming tour she casually and quite earnestly referred to them as “her drums.” When she said that we be both looked at each other as we grasped the meaning of her words and started to laugh! I completely understand her connection to them. They represent the feminine energy by the mere fact that as a plant they are connected to the earth. Add to that the fact that they need water to amplify their resonating sound and you have an additional connection to the healing and medicinal aspects of water – all feminine characteristics.

Do you have any thoughts you'd like to share about the Mayan calendar and 2012?

The Mayan calendar is a wonderful expression of indigenous knowledge coupled with acute awareness of the natural order of the universe. It is very similar to the Mexica [designed] Tonalmachyotl Stone [the Aztec Calendar]. It is also a reminder of how all things move in cycles. As one cycle ends, another begins.

I do know that Mayan elders do not appreciate or support those people that spread “doomsday” stories associated to the year 2012. Rather, they hope that humanity will embrace a more native/indigenous connection – to live with nature as opposed to trying to control nature and to add to the energy produced by the alignment of the planets in our solar system on a cosmic level. Opportunities are here now to join with others in adding your energy for a more impactful transformative experience. In essence, ask yourself what you want the world to be and be the model for that transformation.

Keep in mind that all things that exist are energy. With the coming alignment of some very specific celestial bodies within our own solar system and galaxy, energy fluxes will manifest. To what extent, no one can say so do not fear what may or may not happen. Live in the moment as you want the world to be, plan for a prosperous future for your family and community, and remember that every moment is precious.
Tell us more about the different projects of Aztec Stories.

Throughout the year I share themed programs typically based on the seasons. I have a spring program, a fall program that shares knowledge about the origins of Dia de Los Muertos/Day of the Dead, I have oral tradition storytelling programs, and I have a very special foods program titled “The Seven Warrior Foods of the Mexica People.” I also offer workshops on making gourd water drums. In addition to the performances I have also recorded three CDs which are available on my web site. And just recently I started making how-to videos for my web site and YouTube.

Your day job is at Mattel. How do you feel being in what some might say are two worlds — the world of corporate America and in Aztec Stories?

This comes back to one of your earlier questions about learning and maintaining your cultural heritage, knowledge, and wisdom, while simultaneously acquiring contemporary skills and technology so as to become a contributor in the global community. I do live in both worlds and enjoy it! The corporate world supports the day-to-day living for my family and my cultural journey supports my passion. It is not uncommon for an artist to have a job in addition to making time for his/her art. And, in today’s economy, many artists need that alternative form of income to sustain themselves and their art. I would add that it works to your advantage in keeping the two jobs separate in focus and goals so that one does not infringe upon the other. Also, find a job that you enjoy contributing your energies towards – something that is meaningful to you.

What have been some of the reactions of the children at your presentations?

A sense of pride to those connected to the native cultures of this continent would be a frequent reaction I see. Also a true curiosity to know and learn more is something I see and hear expressed regularly. Children love the instruments, as do adults. When they see a turtle shell and learn that it is a two-toned drum, they are amazed and curious. I love watching their expressions change when I introduce a new instrument and tell them the story behind it. They are captivated and looking forward to “what’s next”?

Will you tell us more why you decided to make many of the musical instruments you play?

I love working with my hands and natural elements. Plus, I feel that my energy becomes part of the instruments – they are a part of me. I love decorating them with symbols and images that tell stories. When someone asks about a specific instrument, the decoration allows me to share cultural insight pertaining to that particular instrument. One other aspect that I enjoy while making an instrument is the focus and attention it requires – it becomes almost a meditative experience, it calms me and relaxes me and slows me down to a comfortable rhythm. And, I get to make them outside in my backyard which reconnects me to nature – the wind, sun, birds singing, hawks flying high above me, I get to see my dogs running around exploring their world – it puts me in the moment, the here and now, and that’s something we all need to do.

What else would you like to share with the readers?

Discover your gifts and talents and then develop them to the highest degree. This will make you an asset in any field or career you pursue. Be proud of who you are – remember that you are the dreams and aspirations of your parents, grandparents, and all those who went before you. Make them proud of who you are. Additionally, work towards the betterment of your community both locally and globally.

Peter Apel is this amazing singer/songwriter from New Mexico whose first CD I've Got a Dinosaur on My Head is rocking the kid world! I felt like a happy child when I saw him live. At the same time, I was awed by his authenticity combined with a polished and world-class presentation. Let's visit with Peter and find out more about him.

When you perform for children and families, I can imagine that there can be a lot of spontaneous and unexpected reactions to your music. What is one of your most memorable encounters with children and your music?

That’s a good observation. Because kids are so eager and honest, something funny happens in almost every show. There was a preschool class singing “I’ve Got a Dinosaur on My Head!” for their spring performance, and I spotted a young boy improvising by playing air guitar…to MY song! That song is requested in every show and gets lots of plays on my website.

After singing about all the animals already in the song, kids love to improvise by singing about all kinds of other made-up items on their heads. But the really big thing is hearing the kids sing together. I still get a lump in my throat when the kids and parents really belt it out and sing along with me. Nothing is better for a songwriter than to hear a bunch of kids singing a song that you wrote. It’s a reminder that I’m doing a little more than just singing silly songs. It’s so rewarding to feel that I may play a part in helping these kids build their interest in music.

When I saw you perform "Sometimes I Eat Oatmeal for Breakfast" it was so fresh and happy and joy-filled. I am smiling right now just remembering it. You exude a purity and innocence - unsullied wonder of childhood. Tell us about your life's path. What was your childhood like?

Thank you for the nice words. I wrote that song at the request of my young son, and he sat right with me as we worked it up and decided what should go on the oatmeal next. People really get a kick out of the idea of having a song about their breakfast comfort food.

I hear from parents all the time that kids are trying new oatmeal toppings because of that song, but my favorite story is from the mom that started eating oatmeal. I guess she had avoided oatmeal all her life, and after playing the song over and over for her kids, she thought she’d give it another try. Now she’s a total oatmeal expert, experimenting with different recipes, trying steel cut oats and all that.

Back to your question, I was fortunate to be blessed with great parents. They successfully raised a family of five kids through lots of examples of love, respect, and responsibility…and of course, humor. Everyone was able to take a joke as well as dish it out. We were also part of a large extended family with grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins, who visited regularly, celebrated holidays together, and supported each other through thick and thin. We had good exposure to the outdoors, which gave me a strong appreciation for nature. In an environment like that, you grow up with a certain internal anchor or strength, probably due to the deep-rooted feeling that you have many people you can always depend on.

When I’m performing, I’m hoping to tap into and to share that goofy fun we used to have as kids, before everything got more complicated, but in order to be relaxed on stage, I have to know my material well. It takes lots of work and preparation like anything else. I regularly ask for performance feedback from respected peers as well as audience members, and I’ve received extremely valuable insights from professional magicians, singers, clowns, children’s authors, and of course, teachers – all of whom have very relevant perspectives.

In today's world, so many people feel cynical and depressed (just look at how many medicine cabinets have a bottle of antidepressant medications). How do you maintain your inner light? Your joy of life? The wonder that infuses your songs?

I try to find humor and pleasure in simple things, and more importantly, I make special effort to allow myself to enjoy those moments. Several years ago, I realized that we all build up these defensive walls to protect ourselves from getting hurt, but in the process, we can also end up shielding ourselves from the people and or experiences that can give us the basic nourishment and strength we need to balance out our challenges. The big “gotcha” is that a person sometimes has to stop whatever they’re doing for at least a moment to let those good things in.

It sounds so cliché, but the simple moments in life are the best, and they don’t cost much. I’m obviously nourished by good music. I’m also nourished when I realize I can teach someone else something. And even if I’ve had a rough day, the smell of a fresh-baked cinnamon roll, the site of an unusual cloud formation, or a glimpse of a child’s (or adults) proud look as they learn something new will make me smile again. My hope is that I can capture those simple ideas or feelings in my songs, and that through the medium of music, others can share in a moment or two of simple fun.

Can you tell us something about your influences? Who has influenced you - artistically, philosophically, spiritually?

At a young age we were encouraged by our parents to enjoy music. For example, my dad actually sang some of his best stories to us, and my mother always kept a basic classical guitar in the house; if an older sibling took one away to college, she would replace it with another. The rule was basically, "If you have an urge to make music you won't find an obstacle in my house.”I’m sure that contributed to my appreciation for folk music and storytelling.

But I’ve always been drawn toward sound and rhythm, and the core of my music training is in drums and percussion. You might say I started as a toddler, if you count playing on empty oatmeal containers with a spoon or walking around the house making rhythmic “music” with one foot stuck in an empty pan. I received my first (toy) drum set in kindergarten, and through music lessons and school programs, I participated in everything from jazz band to concert band and orchestra. I was certainly influenced by the core-style marching I did in my college years, as well as an incredibly fun classic rock band that I played in for several years.

Being from the Southwest, country music also was a big influence. I’m intrigued by almost all instruments, so over the years I’ve dabbled in piano, banjo, harmonica, and even a little flamenco guitar.
All these experiences are now a part of me, and they work their way into my music in subtle and sometimes unexpected ways.

What was your inspiration for creating the character of Fred Pinsocket?
Fred has been around for many moons. The original was just known as “Fred,” and was a little cave-man guy that I created while doodling around the seventh grade or so. Fred evolved over time, appearing as a baseball player, drummer, guitar player, and such. I didn’t market him, but I used him occasionally for personal greeting cards for family and friends.

Several years later, in a summer job, I was building printed circuit boards, and we used components with names like “10-pin sockets,” “18-pin sockets,” etc.

"Hey! That would make a great last name!" Poof. Fred Pinsocket was born.Recently, with the “I love bananas” song, it was a natural next step to re-create Fred as a little spaceman character, and to give him a voice and space piano.

The kids really like Fred, and they like the whole idea of the spaceship landing and then taking off again. One little girl had a birthday sleep-over party and gave Fred Pinsocket T-shirts for all the guests, and a friend told me his four-year-old son changed his last name to “Fred Pinsocket.” Funny stories like that make my day.

We also named our business after Fred. It’s fun to wear shirts that say, “Fred Pinsocket Staff.” Basically, I work for a cartoon.

Your songs get radio play. Wasn't it a Denver DJ who said his favorite morning song was "Sometimes I have Oatmeal for Breakfast"? As a DIY (do it yourself) artist, how do the radio stations find out about your music?

In this case, my sister sent a CD to a popular Denver radio station with a nice letter (my sister’s a great fan). As you know, DJs get stacks and stacks of CDs handed to them, so we didn’t expect too much; but shortly after, the song was used as part of a morning commute call-in contest. One of my sister’s friends said they were listening to the show and their kids were singing along in their car. The DJs said something about it being their favorite breakfast song.

There was another time I was doing a fundraiser concert for a school, and a local radio station actually switched up their programming and played most of my album during their jazz lunch hour. That was really a super gesture on their part. As you know, radio airplay can be tough to get, especially for independent artists, and I’m still trying to figure out that whole game. For sure, this is an industry where you never stop learning.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to follow your path, to take their songs out of the living room and share them with the public?

Okay. Keep in mind, though, that my preferred path is to focus more on the journey than some end-result, and I’m doing a lot of things myself that could probably be done by someone else. My path is sometimes slower because I love more than just the music. I love figuring out what makes things tick. I love figuring out the technology, the social dynamics, and even the business and marketing aspects. I’m even re-discovering how much I love to teach.

Sometimes these can be very distracting from the goal, but for me, much of the reward is in experiencing those things. Okay here goes my shot at advice…
I have a feeling each person’s path will be different; however, whether you’re slowly gaining a reputation for making music or making a good loaf of bread, I’m sure a part of this has something to do with following your heart and being willing to put in some effort. If you’re doing what you love, it can be a fulfilling journey with lots of self-discovery. Listen to your inner voice first. Pay attention to whether you’re feeling “pushed” to do something that’s against who you are (not good), or whether your being “gently nudged” to move closer to the real you (good).

It sounds obvious, but while you follow your dreams, make sure you keep your feet on the ground and be practical; don’t necessarily quit your day job…yet. Instead, take it a step at a time and test the waters; maybe try playing at an open mic night or at a coffee shop known for a friendly crowd. Along the way, pay attention to what makes you feel great (I mean deep inside) and what doesn’t. Don’t make excuses. Listen to advice from others, but balance that with common sense, and always trust your instincts. Be appreciative of your gifts. Be appreciative of others. Be appreciative in general. Regarding confidence, keep reminding yourself why you’re doing this.

Sure, there can be critics out there, but if you’re worried about rejection, try to think about it from a logical point of view. Ask yourself what’s the worst that might happen if you share your music with people you’ve never met and some of them don’t like it? There are billions of people on this earth. If even one person in a hundred benefits from what you’re sharing, then that’s a heck of a lot of people (6 billion people divided by 100 = 10 million people) that you could potentially connect with, maybe even help in some meaningful way. (I know that’s not exactly a valid way to approach it for a number of reasons, but it sure is fun to think like that!). If you have the capability and the desire to make a positive difference in the world, I hope you’ll give it a try. …but (laughing) don’t quit the day job… yet.

Revered experimental fiction author Italo Calvino is new to me, although he has been writing and winning honors since long before I was born. Mr. Palomar is one of his landmark novels. What's it about?

In one chapter, the protagonist goes to the beach; not to watch the waves, but to completely isolate and analyze — dissect almost, with his intellect — a single wave. The task he has set for himself is impossible to accomplish. So, "Mr. Palomar goes off along the beach, tense and nervous as when he came, and even more unsure about everything."

Poor Mr. Palomar. How many people fall victim to the "scientific" mindset and end up as stressed out and unhappy as Mr. Palomar? It brings to mind the writings of musicologist Christopher Small. From his book Music, Society, Education I learned that Rene Descartes philosophically chopped up everything, the mysterious whole, into categories; humans divided from nature, individual cut off from community, mind severed from body, and spirit divorced from intellect. And most of science acts as if these categories are true. When really they are about as useful as the self-imposed task of Mr. Palomar to analyze a single wave on the vast sea.

Calvino's descriptions of the waves brought to mind a writing of SGI Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda. He uses the ocean as a metaphor for the eternity of life. We in our individual bodies in this life are like waves on the ocean. When we die, it is as if our wave has crashed and reunited with the whole mysterious ocean, or cosmic sea of life, only to rise again as another wave. As Mr. Palomar observed at the beach (much to his chagrin), there truly is no separation between one wave and another. No separation between one life and another. No separation between you and me.

In another section of the novel,

"Mr. Palomar decides that from now on he will act as if he were dead... The gaze of the dead is always a bit deprecatory. Places, situations, occasions are more or less what one already knew, and recognizing them always affords a certain satisfaction... The dead should no longer give a damn about anything, because it is not up to them to think about it anymore; and even if that may seem immoral, it is in this irresponsibility that the dead find their gaiety.

The more Mr. Palomar's spiritual condition approaches the one here described, the more the idea of being dead seems natural to him."

This brings to mind a character in Colin Riggins' screenplay Harold and Maude. It pre-dates Mr. Palomar by almost two decades. In particular I'm thinking of the following bits of dialog from the transcript.

We see 19-year-old Harold in a psychiatrist's office, sent there by his ostentatiously wealthy mother after he staged one-too-many fake suicides to try and let her know how he suffered and to freak her out.

PSYCHIATRIST
Tell me, Harold,
what do you do for fun?
What activity gives you a different
sense of enjoyment from the others?
What do you find fulfilling?
What gives you that special...
satisfaction?
HAROLD
I go to funerals.

Later, Harold meets Maude, a 79-year-old survivor of a WWII Nazi concentration camp, who decided to embrace life with every molecule of her being. In the scene where they recline in kimonos, smoking a hookah in Maude's parked railcar, converted into sumptuous bohemian domesticity, they reflect on death and life.

I haven't lived.
I've died a few times.
MAUDE
What was that?

HAROLD
Well... The first time... these two policemen...told (my mother)
that I was killed in the fire.
She put one hand up to her forehead,
the other one she reached out
as if groping for support,
and with this long sigh,

Colin Higgins said he believes his movie has endured because, "We're all Harold, and we all want to be Maude."

Mr. Palomar, in these sections of Calvino's novel, does not seem to have met his Maude, or Daisaku Ikeda, to show him another way. He seems stuck as pre-Maude Harold, chewing on the concept of living death like a dog worrying a bone.

En otra sección de la novela,

"El señor Palomar decide que de ahora en adelante actuará como si estuviera muerto ... La mirada de los muertos siempre es un poco despectivo. There's this wicked cool guy in Boston who just doesn't give up on his dream. Matthew Lippman went from outcast to celebrated author of The New Year of Yellow that won the Kathryn A. Morton poetry prize. Now he is promoting his new book of poetry Monkey Bars, all the while teaching teenagers and raising babies. How does he do it? Let's ask him!

You've won a lot of prizes for your poetry. Can you tell us something about those prizes and the work of yours that they are honoring?

Thank you for saying I have won a lot of prizes. I have won a few. It’s always surreal. The big one was for my first book, The New Year of Yellow. I had been submitting my manuscript for 14 years to get my book published and then it finally received the winning prize. The other prizes were just for my poetry, in general, not a book.

How did you get into writing poetry?

When I was fifteen years old I made this conscious decision that I wanted to be a poet. But, I had already made the decision to be a poet when I was six, or so. Language was something that I loved and when I was old enough to be conscious of its power and fun, it all came together for me. It was the summer when I was fifteen, in Vermont. I would go to this dock on Miller Pond with my friend Peter and we would write poems for hours. Then, we’d go have lunch.

Can you tell us more about being six years-old and wanting to be a poet? When I was six, I think the only poem I knew was "Mary Had a Little Lamb". What was your introduction to poetry?

I don’t know if I knew what that meant, I just knew that I loved messing around with language and I was good at it like I was good at playing baseball. I wrote some cool stuff in first grade and it just kept on going from there. I felt comfortable and “at home” writing, even when I was that young.

What is your day job?

I am a high school English Teacher. I teach Literature, Expository and Creative Writing. I also run my own on-line Poetry One-to-One Courses. I run eight week courses with individuals on the art of writing poetry. (Here is a shameless plug for my business. My website is www.matthewlippman.com)

So you became a poet and an English teacher. What life path did your poetry partner Peter take in life?

I believe he became a graphic artist and moved to Scandinavia. The last time I saw him, I believe, was when we were 17.

How does your family feel about being the subject of some of your poems?

They love it. Especially my five-year-old. My wife likes the ones about homebirth. My five-month-old chews on plastic toys.

What was your childhood like?

It was a weird mixture of being totally fun and difficult.

Would you be willing to elaborate? I think many of us sometimes feel that the difficulties in our life are preventing us from fulfilling our dreams. What has been your experience? What is your philosophy, your mindset, regarding the totally difficult stuff that life drops on us?

When I was a kid I felt like a bit of an outcast and, at the same time, this incredible need to fit in. I did this “fitting in” by being funny. Outrageous. A bit out-of-my-mind in social situations. People were drawn to that and I felt “loved,” if you will, or embraced. But, it always felt empty. When I retreated from these situations I needed something that I felt I could only get from myself, some kind of internal conversation to help me work out my nuttiness, the thoughts in my head, the feelings in my chest that burned me up. I found language. I found music. I did not have a gift for music and did, a bit, for language. My childhood, like anybody else’s, was full of rich experiences and ones that flat out sucked. Family life was hard and soft all at once. I spent time in my house feeling both part of a family and then, not. So, there was this wicked contradiction that played a big part in my unrest, in my quest for identity. Poetry, writing, helped me to get some of that identity, find some confidence in myself, and I have been on the path ever since.
One thing is true about my poetry “career” is this: I have persevered. And perseverance is a beautiful thing. It pays off, really. So, that is part of my philosophy. I have always believed in my voice and whether people embrace it or not, eh, well, it’s a crapshoot. For a long time no one really paid much attention. Lately, a lot of people have been paying attention. Not much has shifted though, in my work, except for craft. So, yeah, stay on the path. Especially when it is gorgeous.

Who or what have been the biggest influences on your life choices? Who have been your mentors (living, dead, fictional, etc)?

I had a European History teacher in high school who taught me how to read Eliot’s The Wasteland. He was one. My wife, Rachel, has had a profound and poignant impact on my life and writing. Bob Dylan gave me the juice, but he probably gave that juice to a lot of people. Led Zeppelin, too. The Bible. Tony Hoagland and Gerald Stern and my good and dear friend, Michael Morse, a deeply talented poet himself. Matthew Dickman, another poet friend and Jen Woods, the visionary publisher of my next book. There are a lot more, I’m sure, but I’ll end with my kids — Natalie and Eliana — who break open the door every night when we are in the deepest sleep.

What words of advice do you have for someone, young or old, who dreams of writing poetry?

Just write, every week, four times a week. At least.

What else would you like the readers to know?

That poetry should be fun — to read, to write. It should get people fired up, make them laugh, make them pee in their pants, cry, cackle, weep, love, dance, oh yeah, especially that, to dance.

The madness of having children is that they don’t go away.

A. Gracias por decir que he ganado muchos premios. He ganado algunos. Siempre es surrealista. La grande fue para mi primer libro, El año nuevo de amarillo. Yo había sido la presentación de mi manuscrito de 14 años en mi libro publicado y entonces finalmente recibió el premio ganador. Los otros premios fueron sólo para mi poesía, en general, no un libro.

P. ¿Cómo entró usted en escribir poesía?

A. Cuando yo tenía quince años me ha tomado esta decisión consciente de que quería ser un poeta. Pero, yo ya había tomado la decisión de ser poeta cuando tenía seis años, más o menos. El idioma era algo que me encantó y cuando tuve la edad suficiente para ser consciente de su poder y diversión, todo tuvo sentido para mí. Fue en el verano cuando tenía quince años, en Vermont. Me gustaría ir a este muelle en Miller Estanque con mi amigo Pedro y que necesitamos escribir poemas durante horas. Entonces, nos íbamos a comer.

P. ¿Puede decirnos más acerca de ser seis años de edad y con ganas de ser poeta? Cuando tenía seis años, creo que el único poema que yo sabía era "Mary Had a Little Lamb". ¿Cuál fue su introducción a la poesía?

R. Cuando yo era niño me sentía como un poco de un marginado y, al mismo tiempo, esta increíble necesidad de encajar en este montaje que hice "en" por ser divertido. Indignante. Un poco fuera de mi mente en situaciones sociales. Las personas se sintieron atraídos por eso y sentía que "amaba", si se quiere, o abrazado. Pero, siempre se sentía vacío. Cuando me retiré de estas situaciones que necesitaba algo que yo sentía que sólo podía obtener de mí mismo, algún tipo de comunicación interna para ayudarme a resolver mis frutos secos, los pensamientos en mi cabeza, los sentimientos en mi pecho que me quemó. He encontrado el lenguaje. He encontrado la música. Yo no tenía un don para la música y lo hizo, un poco, para el lenguaje. Mi infancia, como todos los demás-estaba lleno de experiencias ricas y las que aspira al máximo. La vida familiar era duro y suave a la vez. Pasé un tiempo en mi casa sintiendo al mismo tiempo parte de una familia y, a continuación, no.
